In its latest monthly report, the Korea Development Institute said Korea's economic improvement may be slowing down because consumers aren't shopping enough. The state-run think tank said the economy is maintaining a modest rate of expansion due to exports, which surged 13.2 percent on-year recently. But retail sales gained only 4.6 percent, decelerating from the previous month's 5.5 percent on-year rise. With private spending slowing and the consumer sentiment index stalling, analysts say it's a sign that improvement in consumption is slowing gradually.
